In recognition of outstanding contributions to the civil engineering profession

Michael Vavrica , P.E.

PANYNJ

Mr. Michael Vavrica is the Resident Engineer for the $9.5B New Terminal One Project at JFK Airport, where he has spent his 11-year career with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, rising from intern to lead engineer. Known as the go-to problem solver at JFK, Michael has managed complex, high-stakes projects including runway reconstructions, substation construction, and emergency repairs, often responding during nights, weekends, and holidays. His leadership, dedication, and deep knowledge of JFK operations have made him a critical asset to the Port Authority, inspiring colleagues and mentoring future engineers. Michael's proactive and collaborative approach has ensured on-time delivery of key infrastructure, such as the AirTrain permit coordination through the New Terminal One site. Respected across all levels of airport staff, he exemplifies public service in engineering. Originally from Fishkill, NY, he now lives in Centereach with his wife Maggie — and despite being a Red Sox fan, his contributions to JFK far outweigh this flaw.
